What you need to know – the basics

The CPD year for all licence and certificate holders starts on 23 March each year and ends on 22 March the following year. The current CPD year runs from 23 March 2021 to 22 March 2022.

Failure to comply with your Continual Professional Development requirements may result in the suspension or cancellation of your licence or certificate.

All individuals who hold a class 1 licence, class 2 licence or a certificate of registration must complete the required training for their licence or certificate category each year.

What is CPD?

All individuals who work in the Real Estate industry in NSW must complete CPD training each year.

Depending on the type of licence they hold (Class 1 licence, Class 2 licence or Certificate of Registration : now called Assistant Agent) they will have different requirements for their CPD criteria.

The short CPD course is to be undertaken by agents with a class 1 or class 2 licence. Any property professionals with a Certificate of Registration (Assistant Agent certificate) must follow a 4 year pathway to obtain their Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice and each year been deemed competent in a minimum of 3 units. 

CPD requirements for a licence holder

A Class 1 & Class 2 Licensed Agent must complete a prescribed amount of CPD Training each year.

Class 2

  • Compulsory topics- 3 hours
    • Covid safe business
    • Material Facts
    • Short term accommodation code of conduct
  • Elective topics – 3 hours
    • Property practice (sales and property management, strata and community management, stock and station agency, business sale or business broking, commercial and industrial property)
    • Marketing skills and/or practice
    • Communication skills and/or practice
    • Property transaction legal requirements
    • Ethics and professional responsibility
    • Fraud prevention
    • Marketing and quality control
    • Workplace health and safety
    • Legislation and compliance

Class 1

Class 1 requirements are the same as Class 2, with a couple of additions

  • Compulsory topics
  • Elective topics 3 hours (Additional elective topic options)
    • Risk management
    • Industrial relations and human resource management
    • Supervision requirements
    • Trust accounting principles and audit requirements 
  • Business skills 3 hours

Class 1 Licence holders must undertake an additional 3 hours of CPD learning in any of the following topic areas:

    • Trust accounting principles and audit requirements
    • Business risk management
    • Business practices, management and governance
    • Marketing and quality control
    • Trust accounting principles and audit requirements
    • Industrial relations and human resource management
    • Supervision requirements
    • Compliance audit and review
    • Fraud prevention
    • Workplace health and safety
CPD requirements for an Assistant Agent (Certificate holder)

As of March 2020, all certificate holders (now called Assistant Agents) are required to commence a learning pathway leading them to the attainment of the Diploma in Property, and the first step is attaining a certificate of attainment for a minimum of 3 subjects by 23rd March 2021.

Unbridle yourself from what can be boring theoretical delivery and head into Fiona’s self paced classroom where we bring learning to life with how to apply your learning through real examples, and in general Fiona’s incredibly engaging approach to the virtual program.

With a combination of written theory, and practical lessons, you’ll be getting more than a peice of paper at the end of this course.

Step 1:

Recognition of Prior Learning Assessment (RPL)

Learning happens outside of a classroom, and before you embark on your formal learning we want to see what you already know we can recognise it in this course.

As an example, if you have been in Real Estate operating as a Property Manager for 12 months,  you may be able to demonstrate the skills and knowledge that you’d be learning in subjects like, CPPREP4122 – Manage tenant relationships CPPREP4123 – Manage tenancy, CPPREP4101 – Appraise property for sale or lease.

At the end of the RPL Process, should your prior learning be recognised as meeting the standards, you will be issued with a Certificate of Attainment in those subject areas by MRT Training.

Step 2:

Personal Learning Pathway

Once you’ve identified the subjects that you must undertake in a formal learning method, we’ll map out a plan for you to complete these within the 4 year term required by the Office of Fair Trading.

You can elect to do this as quickly or slowly as you want, but it must be completed within 4 years from the 23rd March 2020 (or the date upon which your certificate was issued after this date).

Step 3:

Delivery Method

Virtual – Self Paced:

The REAL+ Community hosts a self-paced virtual classroom with MRT Training and Fiona Blayney as your trainer.

Each subject includes the MRT Training Core Subjects as well as additional learning support and pre recorded practical sessions delivered by Fiona. The theory and the fun all rolled into one.

Virtual – Live:

REAL+ delivers MRT Training Diploma in Property via a live private classroom for you and your team. Get a group together within your business, or community and we’ll deliver at a time that’s convenient to you. Learn from anywhere you have access to a web link.

Face to Face:

If Face to Face is the way you’d prefer to go, we’d love to develop a program that works for you and your team. Available to a small or large group, we develop a training pathway and timetable that is reflective of the formal delivery required by your group. Costs vary dependent on participants and location.
